Payson, Arizona is where rodeo began. The annual World’s Oldest Continuous Rodeo in the United States is a world famous event that is celebrated the 3rd full weekend in August Annually. Other annual rodeos held in Payson include the Payson Garry Hardt Memorial Rodeo the action packed Jim Barrett Memorial High School Rodeo.
The first rodeos in Payson were held to provide local ranchers and cowhands a chance to get together and compare their roping skills and cow ponies during the annual “down time” before the big fall roundup. There were only a couple of events in those early rodeos, but it was not long before cowboys from all over the state were showing up to compete in new events like bronc busting, bull riding, and steer roping.
Opportunities abound to fish in the Mogollon Rim. Trout, both stocked and stream-spawned, inhabit many of the streams just below the Mogollon Rim. The lakes, reservoirs, and lower-elevation rivers are home to a variety of warm-water sport fish. Rim Country is full of lakes stocked with a variety of fish species and all are within an hour from Payson.
The trail conditions in the Rim Country can range from easy to very difficult. A trailing experience can include anything from the fulfilling opposition of steep grades and heavy brush, to the exciting discovery of spectacular scenic views and peaceful seclusion from the pressures and congestion of society.
Payson, Arizona's night sky is a spectacular scene, sprinkled with an abundance of glittering stars, planets, and nebulae. Everyone says "WOW!" when they look through the telescope or lay out under the stars.
Payson is at an elevation of just over 5,000 feet and residents like to brag that the town is situated in one of only three, pure air ozone belts in the world. This amounts to one of the best places on the planet for star gazing. Many of the constellations like Andromeda, Scorpius, the Big Dipper as well as many of the planets - Mars, Saturn, Venus, and others await your gaze!
Payson has a dark sky ordinance and unlike larger cities where lights make it difficult to see the stars, Payson doesn't have that problem.
